Knights of South Bronx – bringing hope April 4, 2007

Don’t know how many of you recognize the title. It’s actually the title form a movie, but not a very well known one as far as I can gather, it’s a 2005 movie but a stub at wikipedia. It tells the amazing story of Mr. Richard Mason (played by Ted Danson) who becomes a supplementary teacher at a school in the South Bronx (which is a inner-city area somewhere in New York if I gathered correctly), an underprivaleged school where the headmaster describe anything except the basic curriculum as extra, and it should be treated as that, extra. storbakken , thanx for the comment of a sabbatical, maybe that’s exactly what I needed. But I wan’t to get back to blogging, maybe not this week, but within the next couple of days. For now, some thoughts on this happiness thing.

We went to see pursuit of happiness over the weekend. Touching story, how many of us have ever really gotten to the point where we knew that if we don’t get money today, we simply won’t eat? And having to know that if I don’t get money today, my kid won’t have anything to eat… (more…)

We went to see Blood Diamond last night. It’s about illegal Diamond trading in Western Africa, how the Diamond companies buy up these diamonds to keep them from flooding the market, and in this way finance local wars. It’s similar to Hotel Rwanda and The Interpreter.

 

When Danny Archer concludes that God must have left this place a long time ago, I again realized that this becomes much easier to conclude when stuff start turning bad, real bad. We talk of the holocaust as “bad”, but I’m starting to wonder if Africa today may not be worse than the holocaust. (more…)

Real Peace? Thoughts on Equilibrium January 10, 2007

I watched the movie Equilibrium somewhere while at Klein Kariba. Some initial thoughts on the movie. Great idea, some great scenes, for example where Preston listens to Beethoven’s 9th symphony, but not enough to fill a 100 minute movie. But nonetheless, worth watching.

There is a lot to say for the importence of emotion etc, but it’s something else that really got me thinking. (more…)
